Women's Golf Club Fitting Explained

Women's stock sets are built to a single assumed profile: shorter length, lighter weight, higher loft and one flex labelled L. That profile fits some golfers and misfits many, because height, wrist-to-floor, hand size and clubhead speed vary at least as widely among women as among men. The correct approach is the same as for anyone else — set each specification from the individual, not from the category on the box.

01

Length and lie from measurement

Standard women's clubs are typically built shorter than men's standard. A taller golfer can end up bent over a club that is too short, altering posture and delivery. Length and lie should come from height and wrist-to-floor, and lie should be confirmed dynamically once built.

02

Weight and flex from delivery, not the label

The L-flex label is not standardised and describes a narrow band. Golfers with higher clubhead speed are frequently under-shafted in a stock women's set, losing control and consistency. Shaft weight and bend profile should be set from speed and transition, whatever the letter says.

03

Grip size matters more than assumed

Smaller hands often need genuinely smaller grips, and stock undersize is not automatically correct. Grip size influences release and therefore direction, so it should be measured rather than defaulted.

04

Set composition that suits the game

Higher-lofted woods and hybrids in place of long irons usually deliver more usable carry and softer landings. Composition is a bigger gain than any single premium component and costs nothing extra.

Frequently asked

Should I always play a women's flex?
Not necessarily. Flex should follow your speed and transition, and many golfers fit better outside the stock women's band.
Are women's sets shorter by default?
Typically yes, which is why length should be set from your own wrist-to-floor measurement rather than the category.
Is a full-bag fitting worth it?
Yes, because composition and gapping are where the largest gains usually are.
