How Loft Impacts Distance and Accuracy

Loft is the most misunderstood number in golf because the industry sells it as distance. Loft sets launch angle and a large share of spin, and distance comes from the combination of speed, launch and spin — not from any one of them. For a large number of golfers, particularly at moderate speeds, adding loft adds carry. This page explains why, and what strengthening lofts across the industry has done to bag gapping.

01

Launch and spin are a pair

Carry needs enough launch to get the ball up and enough spin to hold it there — but not so much spin that it climbs and stalls. Too little loft at moderate speed produces a low, under-spun flight that falls out of the sky short. Too much produces a ballooning flight that loses distance into wind.

02

Why strong lofts are not free distance

A seven iron stamped at a stronger loft goes further than an older seven iron, which sells well. It also launches lower and spins less, which can make it harder to hold a green, and the loft removed at that end of the set has to reappear as an extra wedge at the other end or the bottom of the bag develops a hole.

03

Driver loft and the low-loft trap

Low driver loft looks like a speed statement and frequently costs carry. Where attack angle is negative and speed is moderate, more loft usually produces a better launch-and-spin pairing than less. The correct driver loft is the one that pairs with your delivery, not the one that sounds fastest.

04

Loft as bag architecture

Across fourteen clubs, loft is the ladder. Consistent gaps depend on lofts that step evenly and on set composition that carries those steps into the wedges. This is why loft is best decided across the whole bag at once rather than club by club.

Frequently asked

Will more driver loft cost me distance?
Not usually at moderate speeds or with a negative attack angle — added loft often improves the launch and spin pairing and increases carry.
Are strong-lofted irons bad?
Not inherently. They need matching set composition at the wedge end, or the bottom of the bag develops a gap.
How do I know if my lofts are wrong?
Look for two clubs carrying the same distance or a gap you cover with a partial swing.
