Spin Rate

Spin rate is the backspin imparted on the ball at impact, measured in revolutions per minute. It is a result of how the club is delivered and how the head, loft and shaft combination behaves through the strike.

01 / Why it matters

Spin governs how long the ball stays in the air and how it behaves on landing. Too little spin in a driver can collapse the flight early; too much can climb the flight and shorten carry. In irons and wedges, spin is what makes a shot hold a green.

02 / Performance impact

Spin interacts with launch angle and speed. Two golfers with the same clubhead speed can need very different equipment because one delivers more loft and spin than the other. Changing head model, loft, shaft bend profile or shaft weight can move spin meaningfully without any change to the swing.

Lower spin is not automatically better. Reducing spin below what a golfer's launch and speed can support usually costs carry and control rather than adding distance.
