What Data Actually Matters in a Golf Fitting

Fittings drown in numbers, and only some of them change the answer. The variables that reliably move a recommendation are the ones tied to how the club must be delivered and how the bag must be spaced. The ones golfers fixate on — ball speed, single-shot carry, one flattering session — mostly describe a good swing rather than the right equipment. Here is the working hierarchy.

01

Tier one: the variables that decide the build

Length and lie relative to your body and delivery, loft gapping across the whole bag, shaft weight, and set composition at both ends. These decide whether the bag is playable at all. Getting them right is worth more than any shaft-model debate.

02

Tier two: the variables that refine it

Shaft bend profile and torque, swing weight, total weight, grip size and grip weight. These change feel, timing and consistency of strike, and they matter — but only once tier one is settled.

03

Tier three: the numbers that are outcomes, not inputs

Ball speed, smash factor and peak height describe what happened. They are useful diagnostics and poor targets. Chasing a smash factor number by changing equipment usually means chasing centred contact by changing equipment, which works only when the equipment was the reason strike was off.

04

The one input golfers most often get wrong

Carry distance. Overstated distance inflates loft strength, compresses gapping at the short end and leaves a hole between longest iron and shortest wood. Report the shot you hit eight times out of ten, not the one you tell people about.

Frequently asked

Is swing speed enough to pick a shaft?
No. Speed alone ignores transition force, release timing and where the club must be delivered. It is one input among several.
Does ball choice affect fitting?
It affects spin and flight enough to be worth reporting, particularly in wedges and driver.
Should I report my best round or my average?
Your typical round. Equipment fitted to your best day is unplayable on the other six.
