How Often Should You Get Refit for Golf Clubs?

A fitting describes the golfer you were on the day it was done. It stays valid until either you change or the clubs do — and both happen quietly. There is no fixed interval that suits everyone, but there are clear triggers, and there are components that drift out of specification faster than the rest of the bag regardless of how you play.

01

What changes in you

Swing speed rises with training and falls with age. Tempo changes with coaching. Body changes — flexibility, injury, posture — change delivery. A gain or loss of meaningful clubhead speed is the clearest trigger for revisiting shaft weight, flex and loft.

02

What changes in the clubs

Grips harden and lose tack within a season or two of regular play, which changes hand pressure and release. Forged iron lie angles move with use and with mat work. Grooves wear, which shows up as spin loss in wedges long before it shows anywhere else.

03

A practical rhythm

Grips annually for regular players. Wedges most frequently, because groove wear and gapping both drift. Lie angle checks every year or two on forged irons. A full-bag review when your handicap moves significantly, when your speed changes, or when you are about to make a large purchase.

04

Refitting without rebuying

A refit is not automatically a purchase. It often concludes that most of the bag is right and two clubs are wrong. That is the useful answer, and it is why keep/replace analysis is part of the blueprint rather than an upsell path.

Frequently asked

Is there a fixed interval?
No. Triggers matter more than the calendar: speed change, handicap change, body change, or a planned purchase.
Do grips really need annual replacement?
For golfers playing regularly, yes — hardened grips change hand pressure and release well before they look worn out.
Will a refit tell me to buy new clubs?
Only if the analysis says so. Keeping clubs that already fit is a normal outcome.
